The water in the rivers of Sunamganj has risen again due to the onrush of water from upstream and heavy rains. Some upazilas of the district were flooded even in early July.
After that, when the water receded, the people were freed from the temporary confinement.
However, on Wednesday night the situation worsened due to heavy rain again.
Sources at the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said that due to heavy rains in Cherrapunji, India, the water level of the rivers is rising.
Mamun Howladar, executive engineer of Sunamganj BWDB said: “The river water was flowing 5cm above the flood limit near Sunamganj city at 6pm on Thursday. BWDB recorded 64mm rainfall in Sunamganj in 24 hours from Wednesday to Thursday. Due to this, the lower areas of the district are getting flooded. Thus, flooding has occurred again in Sunamganj district town.”
According to the news from Dowarabazar, water has entered more than 50 houses on the eastern bank of the Jiragao river due to the continuous downpour coming down from Meghalaya in India. Many settlements have been destroyed. Embankments on both banks of the Khasiamara River are under threat. Mohabbatpur-Rubber Dam road in Surma union is under threat. Two culverts of the Khasiamara river are overflowing and the road is sinking in Tilagao area.
Meanwhile, the soil is shifting under the culverts adjacent to the Chilai River rubber dam on the Banglabazar-Bogulabazar road of the upazila after the embankment of the Chilai River has broken. Major accidents can happen at any time. Banglabazar to Bugulabazar communication system may be disconnected.
The residents demanded quick reforms in this regard.
Dowarabazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Arif Morshed Mishu said that the UP chairman and the parishad members have been instructed to look into the situation in case of damage to residential houses. The culvert on Banglabazar to Bagula Bazar road will be repaired soon.
