Over 57 tons of green chillies entered Bangladesh through the Hili land port in Dinajpur on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the price of Bangladeshi-grown green chillies has dropped by Tk40 per kg due to increased supply in the Hili markets. It is now priced at Tk260 per kg.
Three importers Satta Banijalay, Sampa Traders, and BK Traders imported the chillies in seven trucks from India.
However, since there were no buyers at the port and the desired price could not be achieved, the chilli consignments were transported to Dhaka.
A seller near Hili land port, Biplab Sheikh, said: "Yesterday (Wednesday) we bought green chillies at the rate of Tk280 per kg and sold them at Tk300. Today (Thursday) we bought them at Tk240. I am now selling them for Tk260.”
The Bangladesh government approved importing 36,830 tons of green chillies from India to address a shortage and curb the excessive price of the spicy item.
The price of each kg of green chillies exceeded Tk1,000 at local markets when the country was celebrating the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
Amid severe criticism, the government was compelled to import green chillies.
