Unidentified people attacked two temples in the middle of the night at Chittagong’s Sitakunda upazila.
The Mahasmashan Magadeshwari temple and Shitala temple, located south of the Machjidda Magpukur in Kumirar union, were attacked early on Saturday, said police.
“An attempt was made to loot the temple's donation box,” said Sitakunda Police Station OC Abul Kalam.
According to temple committee President and Priest Himanshu Bimal Nath, the Jagannath, Magadeswari and Shitala temples were built side by side 30 years ago and are surrounded by banyan trees along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
On Saturday night, miscreants tried to break the gate of the Magadeswari temple. When they failed to do so, they threw bricks all over the temple and overturned the temple urns, he said.
Moreover, they broke the pots of the Shitala temple and tore the clothes around the banyan tree.
Kumira UP Chairman Mohammad Morshed Hossain said that the attackers took advantage of the secluded location of the temples.
He added that since such an incident has taken place, the premises will be brought under CCTV surveillance.
Meanwhile, Sitakunda police OC Abul Kalam said that the matter was under investigation and details will be revealed upon the completion of a probe.
