BIWTA chief censures journos, apologizes later

Chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Golam Md Sadek on Friday came down heavily on the journalists covering the salvage operation at Paturia ferry terminal.

He ordered them to leave the area and behaved rudely.

The BIWTA chief, however, came back soon and sought apology as the journalists protested the incident.

Later he briefed journalists, and hoped that they would be able to salvage the four vehicles still under water by Saturday.

Md Sadek said that rescue ship Rustom would reach Patuaria on Saturday, instead of salvage vessel Prottoy, and assist Hamza in the salvage operation.

“We are now working to salvage the vehicles. If needed, the ferry will be pulled out of the river with the help of private firms," he said.

Around 9:30am on October 27, the ferry -- Amanat Shah -- capsized near Paturia terminal five with 14 trucks and vans, and seven motorcycles on board.

The vessel tilted after water gushed in through a crack in its bottom while it was preparing to anchor at the dock.

On Friday, only one vehicle was fished out of the Padma River. So far, a total of four trucks, six vans and a motorcycle have been recovered from the water.

In-Charge of the rescue mission unit and Joint Director of BIWTA Fazlur Rahman said three more vans and a motorcycle were detected and would be fished out in phases.

None of the recovered vehicles was handed over to the owners, many of whom gathered at the dock this morning.

Earlier, members of the two probe committees formed by the Ministry of Shipping and Manikganj district administration visited the spot at Paturia terminal 5 on Thursday evening.

Head of the district probe committee, Additional Magistrate Sanwarul Haque, said that a report would be submitted within seven working days.
