Jamalpur couple held for ‘murdering’ mother, sister

Police on Sunday arrested a man and his wife for allegedly strangling his mother and sister to death at their home in Melandaha upazila of Jamalpur.

The detainees are Zahurul Islam, son of deceased Joyphul, and his wife Jasmine.

Joyphul’s brother Manik Mia filed a case against unidentified accused on Sunday afternoon.

According to locals, Zahurul, living in Oman, could not communicate with her mother for the last two days.

On Saturday evening, he called his uncle Manik and asked him to look for his mother. Manik then went to the house and saw the doors and windows closed.

Later, he broke open the door with the help of neighbours and saw the decapitated bodies of the duo.

At that time, Zahurul was at his father-in-law's house with his wife after a quarrel with his mother and sister.

Melandaha police Officer-in-Charge (OC) MM Moinul Islam said the decapitated bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue for autopsy.

“A sharp knife was also recovered from the spot. Zahurul and Jasmine have been detained for questioning,” he added.

Nasir Uddin Ahmed, superintendent of Jamalpur police, said apart from cutting the throats of the victims, there were marks of stab wounds on different parts of their bodies.

He also said multiple teams of the police were working to unravel the mystery of the murder. “The killings are initially thought to be a family dispute.”
