One dead, seven injured in Jhenaidah pre-polls violence

One person was killed and at least seven others were injured in a clash between supporters of rival chairman candidates in the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) elections in Jhenaidah.

A clash erupted on Friday between the supporters of incumbent UP chairman Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, who is running on the ruling Awami League’s ticket, and independent candidate Julfikar Tipu at Shailkupa upazil’s Sarutia Union, said police.

Additional forces have been deployed in the area following the clash, said Shailkupa police OC Rafiqul Islam.

At least eight people were taken to the state-run hospital in Shailkupa town following the clash involving sharp weapons. Among them, 65-year-old Haran Biswas was declared dead on arrival.

Elections to the Sarutia union council are scheduled for January 5.
