Kuet show-causes 44 students over teacher’s death

Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) authorities have show-caused 44 students over the death of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) Department teacher Prof Md Selim Hossain.

The Kuet Students Welfare Council served the notice on Thursday, said its Director Ismail Saifullah.

The students whose names came up during the probe have been told to respond by January 3, he said.

On December 3, the university was declared closed till December 13 after the death of Prof Selim, allegedly due to mental torture and harassment by some Chhatra League activists. The university students were asked to vacate their dorms by 4pm that day.

Besides, a five-member probe committee was formed and asked to submit its report within 10 days. However, the panel submitted the report on December 29.

Prof Md Selim Hossain who was also a provost of Lalan Shah Hall, died hours after some Chhatra League activists, led by Sadman Nahyan Sejan, general secretary of the Kuet unit of Chhatra League, allegedly confined the teacher to his office and mentally tortured him to accept their person of choice as the dining manager of Lalan Shah Hall for the month of December.

During the confinement, the professor had allegedly been subjected to abuses, humiliation and threats, his colleagues said.

On December 15, his body was exhumed and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for a forensic examination. He was laid to rest at the same place after the autopsy.
