Narayanganj train-bus crash deaths rise to four

One more victim of the Narayanganj train-bus crash died taking the death toll in the accident to four.

Mejbauddin Ahmed, 65, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 7am on Monday, confirmed DMCH Police Outpost In-charge Bacchu Mia. 

The deceased was a cold storage manager in Fatullah, said his brother-in-law Rafiqul Islam. 

He was hit on his way home from the workplace, he said. 

On Sunday, three more people, including a child, were killed after a train crashed into a bus stuck on the railway tracks at a level crossing in Narayanganj. 

Meajbauddin was among the at least nine more people who were injured in the horrific crash.

The train, coming from Dhaka, was on its way to Narayanganj Railway Station at around 6pm when it hit the bus, carrying 10-15 passengers, stuck at the level crossing due to traffic.

The collision had crushed the front side of the bus, which was also dragged a few metres away by the train.

Two men were killed on the spot while the child, who had lost his left leg, died on the way to DMCH. 

Officials identified one of the men as egg seller Abul Kalam, 50. His body has been handed over to his family.

The injured were sent to DMCH and the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR or commonly known as Pongu Hospital) for advanced treatment.

After the accident, train services between Dhaka and Narayanganj were suspended until 7:30pm.

Police are yet to identify and catch the driver of the bus and his assistant. However, the district administration formed a three-member committee to probe the matter. 

Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mostain Billah said the families of each deceased will be given Tk25,000 for funeral purposes and Tk10,000 to each of the injured for their medical treatments.
