Kuet extends closure to January 6, classes resume from January 9

Authorities at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) has extended the shutdown till January 6.

Residential halls will reopen the next day while classes will resume from January 9, according to a decision taken at a meeting of the syndicate on Thursday.

The university was declared closed on December 3 after the death of a teacher, who was allegedly harassed by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League. The closure has been extended twice since then.

Vice-Chancellor Kazi Sazzad Hossain told the media on Thursday that the probe panel formed over the death Professor Selim Hossain has informed that it would submit its findings within five working days.

Selim, 38, a teacher of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department at the university, was also the provost of Lalan Shah Hall.

According to faculty members of the university, Prof Selim died hours after some Chhatra League activists led by Sadman Nahyan Sejan, general secretary of KUET Chhatra League, allegedly confined the teacher to his office and mentally tortured him to accept their choice as dining manager of Lalan Shah Hall for December.

During this confinement the teacher was allegedly subjected to abuses, humiliation and threat, according to colleagues.

On December 15, authorities exhumed the body of Selim, which was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for a forensic examination.

“Due to the uncertainty surrounding his demise, a proper forensic examination of the body is required to determine the exact cause of the professor’s death,” said Officer-in-Charge Prabir Kumar Biswas of the local Khanjahan Ali police station.
