Comilla man dies in pre-polls violence

An attack on a rally of a union parishad chairman candidate in Comilla’s Nangalkot upazila has left one of his supporters dead and at least 14 others injured.

Shakil Hossain, 22, died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka on Thursday.

According to locals, some 20-30 supporters of the ruling Awami League’s chairman candidate in the elections to Peria union, Humayun Kabir Majumdar, launched an attack on the rally of rebel candidate MA Hamid on Wednesday night, leaving 15 people injured.

Of them, Shakil was first taken to the upazila health complex, then to Comilla Medical College Hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) due to his worsening condition.

He succumbed to his injuries at DMCH on Thursday night.

Hamid said he wants the people involved in Shakil’s killing to be hanged.

Meanwhile, Kabir said he does not know anything about the attack.

Nangalkot police OC Faruk Hossain said a complaint has yet to be filed in this connection.
