1 die, 3 injured in Comilla EPZ roof collapse

A woman died and three others sustained injuries when the false roof of a storeroom of an under-construction building collapsed in the Comilla Export Processing Zone (EPZ).

The deceased was identified as Josna Begum, 50, a sweeper for the company. She is survived by four children and her husband.  

The accident took place at the building of Nasa Spinners and Garments company around 11pm on Saturday.

EPZ police outpost Inspector Mokhlesur Rahman, of Comilla South Model police station, told Dhaka Tribune: "We have visited the scene. Necessary steps will be taken after talking to the EPZ authority.”

Nazmul Haque, security in-charge of Comilla EPZ, said two of the injured, including Josna. were taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital. “Upon arrival, the on duty doctor declared her dead.”

“There were casualties when the false roof of the storeroom collapsed,” said Faruk Uddin, security in-charge of Nasa Spinners and Garments.

Employees of the company have been given leave after the accident, he added.

Zillur Rahman, general manager of Comilla EPZ, said: “We talked to the company. They told us that the victim’s family will be given all the compensation they need.”

He added that details of the accident will be revealed later.
