Rangamati district unit Awami League has expelled a rebel candidate in the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) polls and his wife for violating the party’s rules.
The duo are former vice president of Bilaichhari unit Awami Jubo League Samatosh Chakma and his wife Sraboni Tanchangya, who is a member of the upazila unit Awami League.
According to party sources, the Awami League nominated Ram Charan Marma Russell as the chairman candidate for the Kengrachhari Union Parishad elections under Bilachhari upazila.
But Samatosh claimed himself a Awami League leader during his election campaign as well.

Samatosh had resigned from the post of vice president of upazila unit Jubo League in 2016.
Upazila Awami League President Abhilasha Tanchangya and General Secretary SM Shahidul Islam said in a joint statement on Monday that the decision was taken as the couple tarnished the image of the party.
District unit Awami League General Secretary Haji Md Musa Matabbar said: “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given clear instructions that if any member of the party contests the polls as a rebel candidate or works against the party, s/he will be expelled from the party directly.”
