Transport strike: Passengers from India stranded at Benapole

Hundreds of passengers coming into Bangladesh from India through the Benapole border point found themselves in a tough spot as no buses left the local terminals on Friday morning.

Seeing no other alternative, people were forced to hire three wheelers or rickshaws to go to relatives’ homes or check into hotels.

Jessore Transport Workers Union President Azizul Alam Mintu said the sudden hike was bound to be detrimental to the transport sector.

Workers said the economic damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic had yet to be reversed as people were still struggling to get back to normal life.

The sudden hike in diesel and kerosine prices by Tk15 per litre has triggered nationwide protests from bus and cargo owners.

The Bangladesh Bus-Truck Owners Association, Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation and Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van Drivers Union have stated that the strike will continue until the new prices are declared null and void or bus fares are increased.
