Diarrhoea outbreak grips Jhenaidah

As many as 160 patients were admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital with diarrhoea in the past two days, hospital sources said Friday.

Of them, 110 patients were currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. 

The worst affected areas are Hamdoh, Kanchanpur and Mollapara of the district.

Authorities are struggling to provide hospital beds as the number of patients has witnessed a sudden jump, the sources added.

Jewel of Alhera Para in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila said three members of his family were taken to the hospital with diarrhoea.

Sonali, a resident of Khandakar Para, her daughter was also down with the water-borne disease, followed by her husband.

Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Tapas Kumar said the affected are mostly elderly people.

He said a shortage of doctors and nurses was hampering the treatment of patients.

Hospital Superintendent Dr Harunur Rashid, however, said the patients are getting proper treatment at the hospital and were getting proper medications. 

The diarrhoea outbreak will soon come under control, added.
