The Tangail teenage boy, who the police say murdered a schoolgirl before trying to kill himself with the same weapon, has died at a Dhaka hospital on Thursday.
Seventeen-year-old Monir was declared dead by doctors at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 7.30am, Abdul Al Mamun, the Tangail company commander of RAB’s CPC 3, told Dhaka Tribune.
Monir was found with stab wounds on Wednesday morning with the throat-slit body of ninth-grader Sumaiya Akter at a building in the district’s Elenga upazila.
They were classmates, but Monir dropped out of school and took the job of a transport worker.
Monir and Sumaiya were found in a pool of blood in the staircases of a building on the College Road in Elenga upazila town early morning on Wednesday, said police.
Monir was rushed to the state-run hospital in Tangail before being transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery late on Wednesday.
Investigators said the same day that Monir killed Sumaiya after failing to have a relationship with her.
After going through security camera footage, investigators concluded that the boy murdered Sumaiya before stabbing himself with the same weapon, senior RAB officer Mamun said on Wednesday.
Monir was formally detained late on Wednesday, he said at the time before adding details would be provided at a media call on Thursday.
