Police start case against 500 unidentified people over clashes in Sylhet

Police have initiated a case against three identified and 450 to 500 unidentified people over clashes between the police and a crowd in Zakiganj upazila in Sylhet.

Zakiganj police station Sub Inspector (SI) Amirul Islam Shikdar filed the case on Thursday, Sylhet Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Lutfur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune.

He said police arrested three people on Wednesday night in this connection.

The arrestees are Hannan Ali, Reza Hossain and Foyez Ahmed.

According to sources, when the Comilla incident of an alleged besmirching of the Holy Quran went viral in the area, locals took out a procession in protest on Wednesday night.

At the time, the protesters started vandalizing the cars of the upazila nirbahi officer, additional superintendent of police and the upazila parishad chairman.

Later, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.

Police said they had tightened security at the temples and puja mandaps to prevent further such incidents.
