A section of the Sylhet unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling party's student wing, led out a procession with brooms in protest of the new district and metropolitan committees formed after four years on Tuesday.
Nazmul Hossain was selected as the new president and Rahel Siraj as the general secretary of the district unit Chhatra League. On the other hand, Kishwar Jahan Sourav became the president of the metropolitan unit and Nayeem Ahmed its general secretary.
The committees were announced by Chhatra League central committee President Al Nahian Khan Joy and General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya.

The Telihaor group of Sylhet unit Chhatra League rejected the new committees and organized a procession with brooms in the city. They also burned tires in the Chauhatta Point area in the afternoon.
The leaders of the section alleged that the new committees were formed through bribery.
Muhibur Rahman and Jawad Ibn Zahid Khan, who were made central committee members, handed in their resignations after the announcement.
On the other hand, another section of Chhatra League organized a welcome procession for the new committee. At one point, the two groups confronted each other at the central Shaheed Minar.
Police intervened and quelled the dispute.

Former district unit Chhatra League president Shahriar Alam Samad, who led the procession that rejected the new committees, alleged that devoted party activists were not evaluated properly.
According to party sources, the Chhatra League’s Sylhet district and metropolitan units have always been divided into several groups backed by different Awami League leaders.
This time, the Telihaor Group was deprived as the leadership was distributed among the Shuvechchha, Tilagarh and Kashmir groups of Sylhet Chhatra League.
