The Rajshahi University authorities have cautioned the students that allegations of ragging or torture and harassment of the new entrants would be dealt with an iron hand.
“Based on allegations, the accused will be expelled from the university and legal action will also be taken against them,” acting proctor Dr Liakat Ali said on Tuesday, when the newcomers were welcomed with flowers at different departments.
“We’ve taken all preparations to stop ragging. Loudspeaker announcements will be conducted on the campus to make everyone aware of it,” he added.
The stringent measures came at a time when newcomers being tortured, harassed and bullied the by seniors in the name of socialization or initiation ritual has become a menace in different educational institutions of the country, due to reports of injuries, deaths and suicides.

In this regard, a letter was issued by the acting proctor on Monday.
Academic activities of the new batch started on Tuesday with reception programs at 10am. The admission formalities will continue till January 15 to fill up the vacant seats, according to Administrator of the public relations office Dr Azizur Rahman.
This year, some 127,647 students sat for the admission tests against 4,191 seats under three units from October 4-6.
