Man poisoned to death as ire turns fatal in Comilla

Being driven by animosity, a farmer in Debidwar upazila of Comilla has murdered a man in a carefully planned manner by drowning him after giving him poison-laced soft drink.

Solaiman Hossain, 55, hailing from Tulagaon village under Sultanpur union of Debidwar, killed autorickshaw driver Yunus, 39, of the same village on the night of October 17, says the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Law enforcers found Yunus’s body in a canal the same night, but had been clueless as to who had committed the murder until just recently.

The next day, Wahida Akter, the deceased’s wife, started a case against several unnamed persons. Yunus’s family had said that they did not know if someone held a grudge against him, making it harder for the police to solve the murder.

On October 21, the case caught the attention of the RAB, which soon established a connection between the deceased and Solaiman through intel and use of technology.

RAB detained Solaiman, also a snake catcher, on Saturday, and he later confessed to his crime during interrogation.

Quoting Solaiman, Major Md Sakib Hossain, company commander of RAB-11 CPC-2, said Yunus used to tease and make sexual advances towards female members of Solaiman’s family.

“When they informed Solaiman about the matter, he became extremely angry and resentful towards the victim. He later got acquainted with Yunus with a plan to kill him later,” he added.

At one point, Yunus had told Solaiman that he wanted a second wife and asked him to look for a bride, said Major Sakib.

On the morning of October 17, Solaiman told Yunus that they would go to see the bride-to-be at night, and even took him to a hair salon in Chandina upazila to prepare for the supposed visit.

Solaiman had already bought a bottle of soft drink and rat poison from a local store. Later at around 9pm, he got Yunus to drink it after they had reached a secluded area and dumped him in the canal when he became unconscious.

Solaiman had been staying at his home thinking that no one would suspect him for the murder, said the RAB official.
