A tragic incident occurred in Cox's Bazar as a Rohingya man lost his life in a landslide caused by illegal hill cutting.
The unfortunate event took place in the Pahartali Islampur area of Cox's Bazar city during the early hours of Tuesday, Fire Service Officer Mohammad Jahed Chowdhury confirmed.
The victim, identified as 22-year-old Yasin Arafat, was a Myanmar citizen who had been residing with his parents in a rented house in Pahartali Islampur after escaping from the Rohingya camp.
Upon receiving the news of the landslide, the fire service team rushed to the scene. They managed to rescue one person from the ground, but unfortunately, Yasin Arafat could not be saved. The doctor on duty pronounced him dead upon arrival at the hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, several workers were involved in cutting the mountains in the area when the sudden collapse occurred. While others were able to escape, Yasin was tragically buried under the debris. After an hour-long effort, the firefighters of Cox's Bazar successfully recovered his body.
Local resident Nurul Hossain expressed concern over the illegal hill cutting activities, stating that Cox's Bazar Sadar Assistant Commissioner Zillur Rahman had visited the site four months ago. However, Rohingya workers continued their illicit hill razing in the dark.
