A large sum of over Tk30 lakh was stolen from the Raj Potato Cold Storage facility in Paba upazila of Rajshahi.
On Saturday night, three thieves broke through the iron gate of the cold storage facility and fled with the money.
The video footage of the theft, captured by the facility's CCTV camera, went viral on social media on Sunday.
The facility's manager, Liakat Ali Sarkar, stated: "We counted all the money and stored it on Saturday night. The vault contained Tk30,67,072, which was the earnings from Thursday, Friday, and Saturday."
"In the morning, our janitor discovered that the office lock was broken and everything was in disarray. They called us immediately. Upon inspection, we found that the vault was also broken into, with no money left inside. Later, we checked the CCTV footage and saw the three thieves breaking into the vault and stealing the money. One of them had an uncovered face, while the other two had concealed faces," he continued.
Liakat Ali informed that three guards from an AID company were on duty at the cold storage that night.
It is suspected that they might have been in cahoots with the thieves as they reported hearing no noise when the locks were being broken.
The matter has been reported to the police, who are now investigating.
Mohammed Ali Sarkar, the owner of Raj Cold Storage, explained that he was unable to attend the office on Saturday due to an eye operation.
“We were supposed to deposit the money accumulated over three days into the bank on Sunday. We have never heard of any thefts at the cold storage before. This is the first incident of its kind,” he said.
Paba police station acting officer-in-charge Mubarak Parvez said that all the CCTV footage from the cold storage has been collected.
“Additionally, we are interrogating the three security guards who were on duty. The police are actively working to identify the culprits and recover the stolen money,” he added.
