11 platoons of BGB deployed in Khulna ahead of city polls

Eleven platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops have been deployed in Khulna ahead of the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) polls, scheduled to be held on Monday.

“Some 11 platoons BGB members have been deployed to ensure overall security during the election,” said Returning Officer Md Alauddin on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has banned the movement of various types of vehicles, including motorcycles, in Khulna from Saturday midnight.

The ban on motorcycle movement will be effective from Saturday to Tuesday.

The ban imposed on the movement of trucks, buses, minibuses, microbuses, jeeps, pickups, and private cars will be effective from Sunday to Monday.

However, candidates and their election agents as well as foreign and domestic tourists are exempt from this rule.

Apart from this, vehicles involved in emergency services, journalists, election officials, and law enforcers are exempted from the imposed restrictions.

Campaigning for the Khulna City Corporation election started on May 26 following the allocation of election symbols.

The whole city has been wearing a festive look during the electioneering.

This year, five candidates are vying for the mayor post, 136 for councillors in 29 general wards and 30 for reserved seats.

Two councillors for wards 13 and 24 have been elected unopposed, reports UNB.

A total of 535,528 people are expected to exercise their franchise in the 31 wards of the KCC, and there will be 1,732 polling booths under 289 polling stations.
