Bangladeshi killed in BSF firing along Lalmonirhat border

A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Kalirhat border at Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Yousuf Ali, 25.

The incident took place near main pillar number 857 in the Kalirhat area of the Jagatber union of the upazila, confirmed BGB Teesta Battalion-2 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Mohammad Musahid Masum.

Locals reported that members of the 169 Raninagar BSF Battalion, based at the Mirrapa camp in the Mekhliganj region, opened fire on a group of cattle smugglers while they were attempting to smuggle Indian cattle across the India-Bangladesh border. 

During this time, Yusuf Ali was hit by a bullet and killed on the spot. His body has not been moved yet. 

Patgram police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Omar Faruk said police have been dispatched to the home of Yusuf Ali and further information will be provided following an in-depth investigation. 

BGB Teesta Battalion-2 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Mohammad Musahid Masum said they have established contact with the border outpost (BOP) camp. 

“To ascertain why the shooting took place, a flag meeting will be held with the border security forces of India and Bangladesh,” he added.
