Rajshahi police have arrested a local Chhatra League leader over his alleged involvement in giving an exam as a proxy and fraud during one of the admission tests of Rajshahi University.
Bijay Kumar Basak, additional commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, gave this information in a press conference at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Senate Building of the university on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrestee is Hasibul Islam Shanto, assistant secretary of RU Chhatra League and joint general secretary of Natore Chhatra League. He is a student of the 2016-17 academic year of the history department of the university.
Police arrested Shanto in the Katakhali area of the city on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the university authorities detained seven people during the admission test of this unit on Tuesday.
One of them gave took the exam on behalf of Rupam Sarkar (roll No 74262) in room 139 of Rabindranath Tagore Academic Building of the university on the fourth shift of the test on Tuesday. He is currently working as an assistant social service officer in Gournadi upazila of Barisal as a non-cadre of 38th BCS. The name of the accused is Sheikh Abu Hanif.
The RMP official said that Shanto was detained in the Katakhali area based on information give by the arrested “proxies” on Tuesday. Later he was shown arrested in a case under the Digital Security Act. Apart from this, one of the seven arrested is working in the Department of Social Services as a non-cadre of the 38th BCS. Although he denied the allegation during the initial interrogation, this information came out in the investigation.
According to several sources of the university and law enforcement agencies, the admission test of the 'A' unit of the university was held on Tuesday. On this day, the university administration detained people for cheating in the examination and giving proxies on behalf of others.
Later, when interrogated at the proctor's office, they admitted to their involvement in proxy and fraud. They were handed over to the police.
On Wednesday morning, the university authorities filed two cases under the Digital Security Act against Chhatra League leader Shanto and 16 others.
Registrar Professor Abdus Salam filed the cases on behalf of the university administration at Motihar and Chandrima police stations of the city.
Nine of them were shown arrested in the case.
According to the statement of the case, Hasibul Islam made an agreement with the proxies to attend the exam on behalf of others in exchange for Tk50,000-Tk60,000.
Faisal Ahmed Runu, the general secretary of the RU Chhatra League, said: "We came to know about the matter some time ago. If the accused person is involved in this incident then organizational action will definitely be taken against him.”
