Awami League-BNP clash: Nearly 500 BNP men sued in 2 cases

A total of 495 BNP leaders and activists have been accused in two cases filed with Patuakhali police station over the clash between BNP and Awami League activists in Patuakhali.

The cases were filed naming 45 BNP leaders and 450 other unidentified BNP men in Patuakhali police station.

District Jubo League Organizing Secretary Nasir Uddin filed a case as plaintiff naming 16 BNP leaders and activists and 250 unidentified BNP men. 

At the same time, Patuakhali Government College Branch Chhatra League worker Raihan Hossain filed another case naming 29 BNP activists and 200 other unidentified people, as plaintiff. 

In the case statement, Raihan Hossain mentioned: "Awami Leauge activists left Patuakhali Government College premises at around 10:30am on Saturday to join the district Awami League's peace rally. On their way to the Titas Mor area, BNP activists attacked them in the College Road."

District Jubo League Organizing Secretary Nasir Uddin mentioned in the case: "BNP leaders and activists attacked while crossing the municipal area on their way to the peace rally organized by Awami League at around 10:30am. At this time, several of their leaders were injured. Later they were rescued by locals and admitted to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital."

District Jubo Dal President Monirul Islam Liton, the main accused in the case, said: "I was holding a peaceful public meeting for our 10-point demand, including the release of Begum Khaleda Zia. At that time Awami League activists carried out terrorist activities in our peaceful assemblies. Our party office and Motorcycles of activists were vandalized.

"At least 100 BNP activists were injured in this attack. Many of the injured activists are still undergoing treatment. No BNP activists attacked Awami League activists. We strongly condemn and protest against the false cases filed against us," he added. 

Patuakhali Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Ashadur Rahman said: "Two cases have been registered in connection with the clash between Awami League and BNP activists on College Road on Saturday. Further action will be taken after the investigation. Attempts to arrest the accused are continuing."
