Rail communication with Sylhet suspended again

Rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country has been suspended again due to efforts to re-rail two carriages and the engine of a train that derailed after colliding with a tree within the Lawachara National Park in Kamolganj, Moulvibazar.

Work began to lift the derailed carriages and the engine of the train at 8:40am on Sunday.

Shamshernagar Railway Station Master Uttam Kumar said that two relief trains from the Kulaura and Akhaura stations have arrived at the accident site to recover the two carriages and the engine of the derailed train.

The carriages and engine will be taken to the Sreemangal station after recovery. Train operations will return to normal after the completion of the recovery work, he added.

Several railway officials revealed that it may take a while to complete the re-rail work.

Earlier, rail communication with Sylhet, Dhaka and Chittagong was disrupted on Saturday morning when an engine and two compartments of the Sylhet-bound Udyan Express derailed after hitting a leaning tree.

Later, at 7:40pm, a rescue train lifted the derailed bogies and the engine off the rail line and set them aside.

Nearly 15 hours later, rail communication on Sylhet, Dhaka and Chittagong routes resumed back to normal.
