A local Awami League leader was stabbed to death by miscreants in Durgapur North union in Comilla on Friday.
The deceased, Enamul Haque, is the organizational secretary of the Durgapur union Awami League and the son of Kazi Abdul Wadud.
Witnesses said when Enamul exited the mosque after the Jummah prayer, a group of miscreants attacked and stabbed him indiscriminately in front of the mosque.
The attack was so sudden and brutal that onlookers were too terrified to intervene.
After the assailants fled the scene, locals rushed the critically injured Enamul to Comilla Sadar Hospital.
He was later transferred to Comilla Medical College Hospital when his situation deteriorated. He succumbed to his injuries and passed away around 3pm.
The police are yet to provide detailed information on the motive behind the murder or identify the perpetrators.
Cantonment police outpost Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun said efforts are underway to identify the killers.
"It is too early to say anything definitive," he stated, adding that extra police forces have been deployed in the area.
