13 Chhatra League men land in jail over assaulting Awami League mayor candidate’s supporters

A Barisal court on Monday sent 13 leaders and activists of Chhatra League in a case filed in connection with attacking the supporters of Awami League candidate Abul Khair Abdullah Khokon Serniabat in upcoming Barisal city corporation election. 

Meanwhile, Barisal city unit Awami League held a press conference demanding fair investigation in this regard. 

The arrested accused was sent to jail from Kaunia police station of Barisal Metropolitan police directly around 3pm.

Later, they were produced before the Barisal metropolitan magistrate court around 4pm.

Judge Al Foisal passed an order to send them to jail. 

Shishir Kumar Paul, the court inspector said that Inspector Haridas Nag (investigation) of Kaunia police station produced the accused before the court with a remand prayer.

However, the court did not give any decision in this regard. 

The accused are Rois Uddin Manna, convener of city unit Chhatra leader, his younger brother Nadim, Parvej Hawlader, Shanto Islam, Mehedi Hasan, Mizanur Rahman Shawon, Mamun Hawlader, Al Amin Hawlader, Rashed Hawlader, Nantu Sonyamat, Imran Hossain Sajib, Fahim and Sumon Hawlader. They are the supporters of Barisal city mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, also general secretary of Awami League Barisal city unit. 

According to the case statement, the four supporters of the mayoral candidate were attacked by a group of BCL supporters led by Rois Uddin Manna and were assaulted with an iron rod in Mohashashwan area on Sunday night.  

Mona Ahmed, joint general secretary of 8 no ward Jubo League, filed a case in the connection at night.

Police and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the 13 accused from different areas of the city. 

Meanwhile, in a press conference held at 11am at the party's office, President AKM Jahangir of metropolitan unit Awami league claimed that Manna was not present in the two kilometre area of the incident place. 

He also demanded a fair and neutral investigation in this regard. 

Meanwhile, Awami League nominated mayor candidate Abul Khair Abdullah (Khokon Serniabat) went to Barishal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital on Sunday night to see injured workers and demanded punishment of the attackers.
