52km embankment in 3 coastal districts turns vulnerable

Panic has spread through the residents in the coastal areas of Khulna, Bagerhat, and Satkhira as the 52km embankment that protects them from high tide has become vulnerable.

The panic gripped among the coastal people due to cyclone ‘Mocha' which intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining area.

The local people are fearing that numerous villages are in danger of being flooded across the region.

There are 2,137km of embankments in these three districts.

The 52-km embankment is in a vulnerable state and could be damaged by possible water pressure.

Among them, 16km of embankments in Khulna, 26km in Satkhira and 10km in Bagerhat are in dangerous condition.

Local people fear that water will enter the coast of Khulna if there is a cyclone or a large tide forms at this time.

This has caused concern if something like that happens, there is a risk of massive loss of resources in these districts.

Around 250metres of the embankment on the northside of Dashalia village of Maharajpur union of Koyra upazila in Khulna was damaged by Cyclone Amphan.

Around 2,000 metres of surrounding dams including that damaged dam were repaired. Later, it collapsed again.

At the moment, 300 metres of the embankment is in danger following damages in three places there.

Residents of Koyra and Paikgacha said that if the cyclone does not hit the Khulna coast, there is still a risk of increasing the water pressure in the rivers due to the cyclone.

There is fear of breaking the embankment when the water level rises.

Water Development Board Khulna Division-1 Executive Engineer Abdur Rahman said: "Out of 379km of embankments under my jurisdiction, three kilometres are in risk and six kilometres are in high-risk condition."

Water Development Board Khulna Division-2 Executive Engineer Md Ashraful Alam said: "

Seven kilometres are in a dangerous condition among 630km of embankments under Koyra, Dacope, Paikgachha and Batiaghata upazilas."

Satkhira Division-2 Executive Engineer Shahnewaz said: "Three kilometres out of 300km of embankments in my jurisdiction are in a dangerous condition. Out of 380 km of embankment under Division-I of WDB, Satkhira, three kilometres of the embankment is highly vulnerable and 20km of the embankment is in dilapidated condition."

WDB Bagerhat Executive Engineer Masum Billah said: "Out of 338km of embankments in the district, 10km of embankments in Shyamnagar and Morelganj upazilas are in a dangerous condition. It could not be repaired due to lack of funds."

Preparations are also underway to evacuate vulnerable people to shelters.
