At least four people, including a UP chairman, have been arrested over an attack on a UNO and others over a land of Ashrayan project in Faridpur's Madhukhali upazila on Thursday.
The arrestees are Dumain Union Parishad Chairman Shah Asaduzzaman, Ibrahim Mridha, 19, Md Prince Mollah, 32 and Kabirul Biswas, 40.
The arrestees were sent to jail through court on Friday, Md Shahjahan, superintendent of Faridpur police station confirmed the matter.
The court fixed Sunday for a hearing, he added.
So far, two cases have been filed over the incident. The cases were filed with the Madhukhali police station on Thursday night and Friday morning.
Sub-inspector (SI) Prabir Kumar and the victim - Madhukhali UNO Ashiqur Rahman Chowdhury's car driver Suman Sheikh filed the cases as plaintiffs.
Some 27 named individuals including six women and 250 unidentified people have been made accused in the cases.
Dumain Union Parishad Chairman Shah Asaduzzaman, 50, also a member of the executive committee of Madhukhali upazila Awami League, has been made the number one accused in both cases.
Meanwhile, a human chain was held on Friday morning to protest against the attack and demand the punishment of the culprits.
The human chain was held under the joint banner of the Upazila Secondary Teachers Employees Welfare Council, Primary Teachers Association and Madrasa Teachers Association at the railway gate area of the Upazila Dhaka-Khulna highway at 10am.
At least seven people, including UNO Ashiqur Rahman Chowdhury, were injured in the attack by locals that took place at Nischintapur village around 1:30pm on Thursday.
The UNO suffered injuries in his left eye in the attack, said Kamrul Ahsan Talukder, deputy commissioner of Faridpur.
Locals said the upazila administration's selected land for the Ashrayan project was not khas land. They said the project was being implemented on private property
On Thursday, the UNO, along with some Ansar members, went to the site after receiving information that some local women formed a human chain protesting the construction of houses on the disputed land.
According to locals, a scuffle ensued when Ansar members tried to snatch banners from the women.
Incensed, locals attacked the administration team, leaving the UNO and some Ansar members injured.
The UNO has been admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur, while other injured were taken to Madhukhali Upazila Health Complex for treatment, said Kamrul Ahsan Talukder, deputy commissioner of Faridpur.
Sumon Kar, additional superintendent (Madhukhali circle) of police in Faridpur, said police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The UNO's car was also vandalized during the incident, the ASP added.
