Over 200 houses and other establishments have disappeared into the Jamuna River in the last 15 days until Saturday as untimely river bank erosion has taken a serious turn in Tangail's Nagarpur upazila.
Besides, many cultivated lands have been devoured by river erosion, and now an educational institution is under threat.
Arju Mia, a local resident, said: "Last year we moved house due to erosion. But we have been affected by it this time as well. Some of our houses have gone into the river."
Abdullah Al Noman Balrampur Government Primary School Assistant Teacher Monirul Islam said the school will be completely submerged in the river within the next few days. “The education of the local children will come to a halt. We school teachers demand quick measures to prevent river erosion to protect the school."
Dhubaria Union Parishad Chairman Shafiqur Rahman Shakeel said the Bangladesh Water Development Board will be notified so that steps are taken to save the school.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wahiduzzaman said: "The issue of river erosion will be reported to the higher authorities and immediate action will be taken to prevent further erosion."
