3 more arrested over recovery of 10 bodies from trawler

The police and RAB have arrested three more suspects in connection with the recovery of 10 bodies from a fishing trawler off Nazirertek Beach in Cox's Bazar, bringing the total number of arrestees to five.

Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Mahfuzul Islam said one of them was arrested on Wednesday night, while the other two were arrested on Thursday morning.

The three are Gias Uddin Munir, Fazal Kader Majhi and Abu Taiyab Majhi.

Gias Uddin Munir has already been sent to court with a remand application for seven days, said the SP, adding that the remand hearing has not taken place yet.

Fazal Kader Majhi and Abu Taiyab Majhi are currently undergoing the process of being presented in court, he added.

Meanwhile, a skeleton was recovered from a canal in Kutubjum union of Moheshkhali upazila on Tuesday night, said Mahfuzul Islam.

The police believe that the skeleton is that of another fisherman who was with the victims and went missing.

Mahfuzul further stated that the autopsies of the 10 decomposed bodies have been completed.

No gunshot wounds or signs of other injuries were found on the bodies, further deepening the mystery surrounding the case, he said.

However, police are conducting the investigation following several leads, and the main cause of these murders might be revealed shortly, he added.

On Sunday, 10 decomposed bodies of fishermen were discovered on a trawler floating off Nazirertek Beach in Cox's Bazar.

According to local fishermen, a few days ago, a group of robbers attacked the trawler, looting and killing the fishermen onboard before placing them inside the trawler's deck and making a hole in it.

Rokeya Begum, the wife of trawler owner Shamsul Alam, filed a case, accusing four people and 50-60 unidentified persons on Tuesday.

Two of the accused, Kamal Prakash Baitta and Karim Shikdar, were arrested on Tuesday and were placed on a five-day remand each.

So far, the bodies of six of the deceased have been handed over to their families, while the remaining four bodies and the skeletal remains are still waiting to be identified.

Their DNA samples have been collected and sent to Dhaka for testing. The identities will be confirmed once the test results are obtained.
