37 BNP men land in jail in Magura, Khulna

A total of 37 leaders and activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associate bodies were sent to jail on Thursday under the explosives act and on charges of anti-state activities.

A Magura court sent 24 leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies to jail under the explosives act, reports UNB.

District and Sessions judge Amit Kumar passed the order after 30 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates surrendered before the Magura District and Sessions Judge's Court in a case filed under the explosives act.

On March 23, police filed a case with Magura Sadar police station accusing 36 BNP leaders and activists under the explosives act over an incident at Parla Primary School in Magura's Shohortoli on March 22.

Later on April 1, the accused leaders and activists appeared before the High Court and sought anticipatory bail, following which the court granted them bail for six weeks.

On the court's order, they appeared before the Magura District and Sessions Judge's Court on April 11 and the court fixed April 27 for the bail hearing.

The court granted bail to six accused, including Magura Municipality BNP unit Convener Kutub Uddin, Jubo Dal leader Farid Khan, Swechchhasebak Dal Joint Convener Kutub Uddin Rana, and sent 24 others including district BNP leader Syed Rafiqul Islam Tushar and Jubo Dal leader Mizanur Rahman to jail.

Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Shahed Hasan Togar and other lawyers appeared for the accused in the case while Public Prosecutor (PP) Eskandar Azam Bablu appeared on behalf of the state.

A Khulna court sent 13 BNP men including its central ICT secretary Azizul Bari Helal and District convenor Amir Ezaz Khan to jail after rejecting their bail prayers in connection with two separate anti-state activities cases filed on 11 February last, reports BSS.

Senior Sessions Judge of Khulna Mir Shafiqul Alam passed the order as the accused surrendered before the court with bail prayers.

Earlier, the BNP men got ad-interim bail from the High Court for three months in those cases.

As part of the countrywide program, leaders and activists of Khulna BNP brought out procession to press home their 10 points demand in the city and all nine upazila on that day.

The BNP men swooped on the police on duty during their procession and tried to create anarchy and attacked them.

Police filed two cases against over 200 BNP men with Digholia and Dumuria police stations on the same night on charges of anti-state activities, anarchy and brought out procession without taking permission from the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) and the superintendent of Khulna district police.
