Awami League’s Barisal mayoral candidate accorded civic reception

Local Awami League leaders and workers have accorded a civic reception to the party- nominated mayoral candidate for Barisal City Corporation, Abul Khair Abdullah (Khokon Serniabat).

Central leaders of the party attended the event in Bibi Pukur on Thursday afternoon. Leaders, activists and followers of former BCC mayor late Shawkat Hossain Hiron and local lawmakers were also present.

However, the absence of the outgoing mayor, Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, and a significant number of leaders and workers of the district and the metropolitan units was noticed on the occasion. 

At the beginning of the program, a boat decorated with flowers was presented to the mayoral candidate on behalf of the district and the metropolitan units.

Khokon Serniabat said: “If I am elected, I will make it a new Barisal. It will be a peaceful and beautiful city. I will not allow any injustice as long as I am alive.”

Later, he raised the slogan “Joy New Barisal, Joy Sheikh Hasina”.

The chief guest at the ceremony, AL Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, referred to Khokon Serniabat as a pure and modest politician, and one of the victims of the August 15 killing.

Nanak said if the voters elect Khokon, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will allocate funds for the development of the city.

He said all party leaders and activists are united and have no differences. 

Abdur Rahman, another Presidium member, said: “The people of Barisal have faced all challenges successfully. We believe that they will succeed in the coming days as well.” 

He warned the leaders and workers not to do anything that may create divisions and harm the party.

AL Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim asked all to participate in the election unitedly.

Awami League Organizing Secretary AD Afzal Hossain, Barisal-5 constituency lawmaker and State Minister for Water Resources Ministry Zahid Farooq Shamim, and district AL General Secretary Talukdar Md Yunus also spoke at the event, presided over by metropolitan unit President and Zilla Parishad Chairman Advocate AKM Jahangir.
