Autorickshaw driver beaten for refusing to pay extortion

An autorickshaw driver was allegedly beaten on Rajasan-Birulia road in Savar for refusing to pay extortion money.

The injured is Bilpab Hossain, 27.

The victim on Monday filed a written complaint with the Savar Model police station mentioning the names of five people including the extortionist.

The accused are former general secretary of Savar Municipal Committee Chhatra League Md Rubel Mondol, 35, Sohail Raj Runner (Nyangra Sohail), 38, Md Sohail, 30, Saqib, 22 and Rabbi, 19. All of them are residents of Savar.

According to the complaint, the accused used to extort Tk20 per day from the auto-rickshaw drivers.

When they reached Chowrangi Super Market in an autorickshaw around 8pm on Sunday, the driver was asked for money. When he refused to pay, the toll collectors attacked him. He was punched and kicked, and the attackers robbed Tk350 from his possession.

Later, people came and rescued him after hearing his screams.

Earlier, accused Rubel Mondol told Dhaka Tribune that they were collecting money on behalf of Abu Naim Sohag (Sultan). Sultan received the tender from the municipality, he said.

Sohag could not be reached for comments in this regard.

Savar Model police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sudeep Gop said: “We have received the complaint. Action will be taken subject to investigation in this regard.”

Meanwhile, toll collection on the road is illegal. Separate orders signed by the deputy commissioner on January 30 and the mayor of Savar Municipality on February 8 said that collection of tolls on highways other than terminals is illegal.
