RU authorities file case over clash between students, locals

Rajshahi University Registrar Prof M Abdus Salam has filed a case against 400-500 unidentified people in Matihar police station on Sunday afternoon in connection with the clash in the university.

Matihar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman Hafiz said the case has been filed in the police station. Necessary action will be taken after investigation against those involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, at 5:30pm on Sunday, RU Public Relations Office administrator Prof Pradip Kumar Panday said through a circular that the university administration is shocked by the unpleasant incident that happened with the students in Binodpur Gate area of Rajshahi University campus on Saturday evening.

The university administration led by the vice-chancellor is making all-out efforts to deal with the situation, the circular added.

More than 200 people, including campus journalists, were injured in the clash that broke out between Rajshahi University students and locals on Saturday.

In the evening, an altercation between a student of the university and employees of a bus over bus fare reportedly snowballed into a clash with local shopkeepers.

During the clash, the students allegedly set fire to several shops in the area, and the police box adjacent to the Binodpur gate of the university was also vandalized.

On receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and fired tear gas and rubber bullets.

The students later occupied the university premises while locals were outside the campus. 

On Sunday, they blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway over the clash.

The students have also set fire to the institution's main gate, and remained there for the duration of the protests.

They blocked on the highway at around 1pm, and the blockade continued till 5pm.

Members of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and police were deployed on the highway to control the situation.

Meanwhile, the traffic movement was halted on the highway due to the protest, and presence of law enforcers. 

The students were also seen chanting various slogans blaming the university authorities's non-operation and failure to intervene during the clash.

They also put blames on the police for attacking the university students. 

Earlier in the day, the agitated RU students locked up the institution's administrative building demanding justice over the clash, which left over 200 injured.

The students have also placed several demands, which include ensuring the safety of students from locals and police, stopping the entry of outsiders into the university, making the university 100% residential, ensuring proper medical treatment for injured students, and taking necessary action within 24 hours of an incident.

Meanwhile, RU Vice Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar is facing pressure from the agitated students. During his visit to the administrative building, the students chanted various slogans against him.

Meanwhile, the presence of students and traffic inside the campus was comparatively low in the morning, due to classes and exams for Sunday and Monday being suspended due to the clash.
