After a violent clash between locals and students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Saturday that left around 200 injured, the situation on the campus is returning to normal, with the university authorities scheduled to have a meeting with law enforcement.
Meanwhile, the presence of students and traffic inside the campus was comparatively low in the morning, due to classes and exams for Sunday and Monday being suspended due to the clash.
The students announced that they would gather in front of Shaheed Dr Shamsuzzoha Chattar of the university at 10am.
Pro Vice Chancellor Sultan-Ul-Islam said: “We have tried to be with the students all the time. Treatment of students in that situation was the main task, and we will sit with everyone. We will have a meeting with law enforcement agencies, and then we will talk with the students.”
More than 200 people, including campus journalists, were injured in the clash that broke out between Rajshahi University students and locals on Saturday.
In the evening, an altercation between a student of the university and employees of a bus over bus fare reportedly snowballed into a clash with local shopkeepers.
During the clash, the students allegedly set fire to several shops in the area, and the police box adjacent to the Binodpur gate of the university was also vandalized.
On receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and fired tear gas and rubber bullets.
The students later occupied the university premises while locals were outside the campus.
Meanwhile, seven platoons of the BGB along with additional policemen were deployed to maintain law and order.
The situation reportedly calmed down after 11pm.
