Officials and employees of Grameen Telecom have held a protest forming a human chain against its chairman, Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, for his alleged willfulness in payment of dividends and dues under the Labour Act.
Hundreds of them participated in the human chain in front of the Rangpur Press Club at noon on Saturday.
Area Manager Shahadat Hossain said all of the officers and employees are the trustees of the organization, and for this reason, Grameen Telecom is supposed to pay 5% of the total dividend every year to its workers.
But instead of paying the dues, the telecom has fired its many employees, he claimed.
“Even after a long period of time, we are not getting our due money including 5% of the dividend,” he said.
He said: "If a respected person like Dr Yunus does not pay the dues of ordinary officials and employees, then we do not know what the country's people can expect from him."
“Our demand is we be paid our dues as per the law; otherwise, we will take legal action against Dr Yunus,” said the protesting workers.
They also sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's direct intervention in this matter.
