With the advancement of time, women in Bangladesh are also moving forward. Like the rest of the country, women in Tangail are also not lagging behind in the workplace.
Their progress is visible today in all fields including social, administrative and political.
At present, 56 women are in top positions at the deputy commissioner's office, police force, education office, health directorate, agriculture office and election office, holding positions like the mayor, UNO, etc.
Besides taking care of family, women are efficiently doing their job at their workplace. They are playing a role in keeping their respective upazilas free of drugs and corruption, including prevention of child marriages and dowry and abuse of women. Women officers are also making a special contribution to the field of education.
Tangail has 12 upazilas. In those, women are serving as upazila nirbahi officers (UNO) in six and assistant commissioners (land) in six. Many upazilas have women as both UNO and assistant commissioners (land).
Dhaka TribuneMeanwhile, 11 women are working at the Tangail deputy commissioner's office, two women at the civil surgeon's office and 10 women are associated with the education office of the district.One woman each is working as a female deputy district jail officer, senior information officer of the district information office, and deputy director (additional charge) of the Office of the District Women Affairs Officer, while two women are performing duties at the District Youth Development Department.
Besides, Mirzapur Mayor Salma Akhtar is serving as the only woman mayor in the district.
Three women are performing the duty as upazila election officers, five women as upazila agriculture officers and two women are serving in police administration.
The women officials of the district said they are encouraging the people and working with them to eliminate social problems by giving the highest importance to the development of the country. They are coordinating and supervising the work of the field administration, taking and implementing important decisions in coordination with the district administration.
They also have to take care of the law and order situation of their respective upazilas. They are playing a role in the supervision and implementation of various developmental works of the government.
Dhaka TribuneWomen are also working on the implementation of various developmental projects through the union parishad, including government permanent shelters, model villages, housing projects and implementation and helping the helpless. At the same time, they are running the mobile courts as executive magistrates.District Education Officer Laila Khanam told Dhaka Tribune that while performing the duties of the government, she constantly faced challenges in the field of education.
“There were many problems when I took charge. But now those problems have been dealt with. Where there were irregularities, I took proper action,” she said.
“At present the position of the district in terms of education is very good. Before I joined the education rate was 74%. Currently the education rate is 90%. I have been nominated as the best education officer in the Mymensingh region since 2017 till now. I became the best education officer in the country in 2017 at the national level,” she added.
Ghatail UNO Munia Chowdhury told Dhaka Tribune: “Few female officials have worked as UNOs in Ghatail. As such, it took some time to change the mentality of the people at first. However, under the umbrella of the prime minister, we women officers can work without fear and perform our duties efficiently.”
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development and Human Resource Management) Nafisa Akhtar said men and women have equal rights. “The contribution of women is now more in all fields as women are advancing everywhere.”
“Many prefer women's work because a woman correctly fulfils the duties assigned to her as easily as possible. There are definitely challenges when it comes to work and we meet those challenges,” she added.
Dhaka TribuneIn this regard, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin Haider said almost half of those working in the Tangail district administration are women. Even at his office, he said, almost half of the members are women.
“So far I have not heard of any hindrance for women in the workplace in the district. But if there are any obstacles then they will be supported,” he said.
He further said: “In Bangladesh, the participation of women in various levels of government and in other fields, including the prime minister and the speaker, is very lively. They continue to operate successfully. I wish them all the best on International Women's Day. I wish them success.”
