An Indonesian woman and a Bangladeshi man, who had been in love for the last five years after meeting on Facebook, tied the knot with a mahr of $1.
The woman, Nicky Ul Fia, 23, and Imran Hossain of Patuakhali got married on Wednesday.
An imam of a local mosque Mawlana Shahidullah performed the marriage ritual, and the groom's grandfather Siddique Hawladar took responsibility as the Wali, or Islamic legal guardian.
Imran's father Delwar Hossain said a reception ceremony was held on Thursday.
Regarding the mahr, Imran said that it was Nicky's idea to take $1 as mahr, which is equivalent to Tk107.
At around 11am on the day of the wedding, the formal legal process of marriage was completed in the court of Judge Mohammad Ashiqur Rahman of Patuakhali District Senior Judicial Magistrate Court.
Imran said he met Nicky in 2016 on Facebook, and their relationship grew into love.
Nicky visited Bangladesh in 2017, but due to legal age restrictions, they were unable to get married at the time.
Despite this setback, Nicky promised to wait for Imran and after five years, Nicky returned to Bangladesh, and they finally tied the knot in accordance with the customs and laws of their country and religion.
In this regard, Nicky said: “I am very happy today.”
Nickey arrived at Shahjalal International Airport last Monday and went to Patuakhali with Imran on Wednesday morning.
