New cantonment in Kishoreganj to be opened Tuesday

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to visit Mithamain, a haor-dominated upazila of Kishoreganj, on Tuesday after around 25 years.

The prime minister is expected to reach the area at 10am, and inaugurate the Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdul Hamid cantonment.

After inaugurating the cantonment, the prime minister will visit the president's residence in the district's Kamalpur.

Later, at around 3pm, the premier will attend a public meeting organized by Awami League at the district's Helipad Ground.

The entire district, including Itna, Mithamain, and Austagram upazilas, have been decorated in anticipation of the prime minister's long-overdue visit. She last visited the district in 1998.

Members of the ruling Awami League have been spending busy days constructing the stage and decorating the venue for the prime minister.

The streets have been decorated with arches, banners, and festoons to welcome the prime minister.

Ruling party leaders and activists reportedly started arriving at the district through railway and waterways yesterday. Leaders believe the public rally will be attended by over 100,000 people.

Local leaders and activists of the Awami League said extensive preparations are underway to welcome the prime minister. Workers have been working day and night to complete the preparations, while administrative and law enforcement personnel are diligently carrying out their duties to ensure the work proceeds smoothly.

Locals report that 25 years ago, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last visited Mithamain, there were no roads or transportation available in the area, nor any infrastructure or development projects.

However, in the past 14 years under the Awami League government, extensive development has taken place in the region, including the construction of roads and highways, they added.

Meanwhile, youth workers of the Awami League said that they have seen the prime minister on TV, but never had the opportunity to see her in reality.

They mentioned that they want to see the primer by participating in rallies and public meetings. The workers also demanded to create job opportunities in the region.

Kishoreganj-4 (Itna-Mithamain Austagram) Member of Parliament, Rejwan Ahmed Toufiq, said: "The Prime Minister has given a lot to the haor region. We don't need to ask for anything new from her. The people here are counting the hours to see her just once.”

The entire district, including the Helipad Ground, has been secured with robust security arrangements. Officials said security measures for the public gathering will be further intensified on Tuesday.
