A video of a 23-year-old youth being tied to a pole with a rope at Bander Par area of West Elisha union on the Bhola-Barisal Regional Highway has gone viral on social media.
Police had been unaware of the incident till about 8pm on Wednesday.
After investigation, it was found that the name of the victim is Md Taher Alam, 23, of Sreepur Anand Bazar area of Barisal region. He is a fisherman by profession. He hunts fish in Tetulia River.
A young man named Rahim recorded the video of the torture on his mobile phone. Later, the video went viral on Facebook.
The incident took place at about 7am on Monday.
In the 2 minute 22 second video, a man aged around 50 is seen torturing Taher with a bamboo stick, tied to a pole of the shop with a rope twisted around his right hand. At that time, the victim started shouting and repeatedly demanded to be saved. At that time several teenagers, youth and old people were present there along with local UP members.
Rahim, who captured the video on his mobile phone, said that Taher was tortured on the suspicion of cow theft. The name of the torturer is unknown yet. However, he is a guard at the shooting school area in Bapta union of Bhola.
UP member Jasim Khalasi said that he saw Taher in Bander Par area in the morning. After some time, the guard saw Taher while riding on his motorcycle looking for his lost cow. While questioning him about his identity and the whereabouts of the lost cow, the guard eventually tied Taher with a rope and began torturing him.
But the youth repeatedly pleaded to be spared from torture as he did not know anything related to the theft. But the guard continued to torture him, said Jasim.
He added that no one was able to stop the guard from beating the youth.
Motahar Jamaddar, UP member of Sreepur ward number 8, said that Jasim Khalasi called him and handed Taher over. He was then treated in Sreepur.
Bhola Sadar Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shaheen Fakir said that he was not aware of the incident. He is preparing to send a police team to the spot.
