Chittagong market fire kills one

A man was burnt to death after a fire broke out at a market in Chittagong's Andarkilla area early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Md Idris, 40, a shop owner.

The fire broke out at a shop in Samabay market around 12:20am and soon engulfed the adjoining shops in the market, said Jahedul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.

The fire was brought under control around 1:30am, after an hour of effort by five units of Agrabad, Chandanpura, and Nandkanan fire stations, said the OC.

The body was recovered from a shop named Alam Engineering, where the fire had originated.

The fire began at the shop in the one-storey Samabay market in the Andarkilla area of the city.

Later, the fire spread quickly to the nearby three-storey building along with AB Surgical Store and three-four printing and press shops.
