Two tourists died as a tourist boat capsized after colliding with the trunk of a tree floating in Kaptai lake in Rangamati on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Hena Rani, 65, and Pushpa Rani, 35, of Joypurhat's Panchbibi upazila.
Rangamati Additional Superintendent of Police (Admin) Maruf Hasan confirmed the matter.
A group of 65 people coming from Joypurhat, hired a tourist boat and went on a trip to Kaptai Lake, according to police.
The incident happened after a whole day's tour, on their way back to the city in the evening. They all drowned in the lake after colliding with the trunk of the tree floating in the lake in the DC Banglaghat area.
The fire service team and the police managed to rescue the other tourists, but the two women died on the spot.
“Three tourists, who received injuries in the incident, have been admitted to Rangamati Sadar Hospital,” said the ASP.
The police official also added that the bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue.
Jalal Ahmed, team leader of the tourists, said: "We came to Rangamati on Monday morning and booked two hotels in Reserve Bazaar. Around 10 am, we hired an engine-driven boat and went to see the Hanging Bridge. While returning from there, our boat got hit by something in the lake and sank.”
