Gun-totting Gazipur BNP activist arrested

Police have arrested a BNP activist, who was seen raising a firearm during Saturday's clash with the Awami League men, in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila. 

He was arrested early Sunday from his friend Hatem's house in Barmi union. Police also recovered a weapon from his possession at that time. 

Confirming the news, Sreepur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said Jahid served jail time in several cases, including robbery, extortion and fighting. 

“It is being investigated to see if there are any other cases against him,” he added. 

Gazipur Additional Superintendent of Police Sanwar Hossain said a weapon was recovered from Jahid. "However, whether the weapon is genuine or fake can be confirmed after the forensic report,” he said. 

Jahidul Islam Jahid, was reportedly seen holding a gun during a clash, counter clash between Awami League and BNP men in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila on Saturday. 

The clashes took place at Sreepur's Barmi Bazar area at around 10:30am. 

Awami League men have been accused of attacking BNP leaders and activists, who were carrying out their march procession. 

Meanwhile, BNP men were accused of attacking the Awami League men at their central office.
