2 shot in Mymensingh Chhatra League, Jubo League clash

Two people sustained gunshot wounds in a clash between Chhatra League and Jubo League, the student and youth wings of the ruling Awami League, on Friday night in Mymensingh city.

The injured – Shakil and Rimon – are undergoing treatment hospital at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said hospital police outpost Inspector Rafiqul Islam.

The clash took place around 8:30pm in the Boundary road area in the city, he said.

Quoting locals, police said that a chase and counter chase, followed by a gunfight, took place between supporters of Rasel Pathan, senior joint convener of city unit Jubo League, and Nowsel Ahmmed Oni, convener of city unit Chhatra League, over establishing dominance in the area.

On receiving the information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Faruk Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, adding that additional forces were deployed in the area.

Legal procedures are under process in this incident. However, he did not admit that anyone had been shot.

Chhatra League leader Nowsel said: "I am not aware of any incident with me or with any activists of city unit Chhatra League."

Jubo League leader Rasel said that there was supposed to be arbitration over a land issue with metropolitan unit Jubo League leader Joy on Saturday. These issues were being discussed. Meanwhile, Nowsel along with 50 to 60 people came to the spot and attacked Joy.

Later, Joy and activists of Jubo League chased them and hurled stones.

However, no firing incident took place, said Rasel.
