A Barisal unit Awami League leader - Fahim Hasnain Khan Arko has been temporarily suspended from the party, just one week after being arrested for forcibly aborting his wife's pregnancy.
Arko is the secretary of ward no 9 under Barisal Metropolitan unit Awami League, said Office Secretary Hemayet Uddin Serniabat Sumon on Thursday.
According to the decision of an emergency meeting of Bangladesh Awami League Barisal metropolitan city, Arko was expelled for breaking party discipline and suspended from the organizational post.
He has also been asked to refrain from all organizational activities, Sumon told quoting a press release issued by Barisal metropolitan unit Awami League.
Fahim Hasnain Khan Arko got married to Muniya Sharmin Priya, a resident of the Kawnia area of the city, some two years ago.
After their marriage, the couple moved to the capital's Arambagh area.
On January 17, his wife filed a case against Arko, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, at the Hatirjheel police station in Dhaka, alleging he forcibly aborted her pregnancy.
According to the case statement, Arko aborted Muniya's pregnancy by giving her water mixed with some kind of medicine, He also demanded a dowry of Tk500,000 and physically abused her when she did not want to give him money.
Arko was arrested from a house in the Mohakhali area of the capital last on January 19.
After the arrest, the only accused in the case, Arko was sent to jail by the court, said the Investigating Officer of the case Sub Inspector (SI) of Hatirjheel police station Enamul Haque.
