There are only 20 public toilets in Khulna and of these only two were constructed in recent years while the rest are decades old.
Most of these 18 public toilets operate under extremely filthy and unhygienic conditions.
People complain that these toilets have no bulb for use at night and are dark even during the day. Many do not have an adequate water supply either.
Also, in many toilets there are no separate toilets for men and women.
The public toilets operated by the Khulna City Corporation are in the west and east Rupsa bus terminal, Khulna Wasa building area, Sonadanga truck terminal, Notun Rasta More, BL College, Joragate Wholesale Market, Khulna Railway Station, Sonadanga bus terminal, Sheikhpara Bazar, Mistripara Bazar, Baro Bazar Fish Market, Boyra Bazar, Rayermahal Crescent Market, Shaheed Hadis Park (Modern), Community Toilets adjacent to Roosevelt Jetty and near Choshma Market.
Apart from this, there are modern toilets in front of Sonadanga Bus Terminal.
Dhaka TribuneThere are two more toilets inside the Sonadanga bus terminal main building and the transport counter. Although the toilets were built by the city corporation and Khulna Development Authority (KDA), their management is in the hands of the lessees.
The toilet at Sonadanga Bus Terminal is unhygienic and dark even during the day. The lessee, Liton, said he was saving electricity by keeping the lights off.
The condition of the Chashma Market toilet is even worse. There is always water on the floor and the only passage is narrow.
The toilet at the Notun Rasta More is no better.
Anis Mahajan, a representative of the lessee, told Dhaka Tribune that they are unable to keep the toilet clean due to lack of money. Not many people use the toilet and the daily budget to clean the toilet is Tk98.
Dhaka TribuneA woman, emerging from the Sonadanga bus terminal toilet, told this correspondent that the toilet was dirty and there was no bin to contain the disposals.
Md Hasan, a community toilet user near Chasma Market on Jessore Road, said that the toilets have been constructed in a congested way and as a result it is difficult to stay clean after entering them.
Nuruzzaman Talukdar, a city corporation official, acknowledged the situation but said the corporation can do very little about the old toilets in the city. However, he said that conditions are better in the new ones.
