RAB arrests fugitive after 18yrs

After 18 years, RAB has arrested Wahedul Islam, the absconding accused who was sentenced to life in the Gangachara murder case of Rangpur, from Uttara area of Dhaka.

Flight Lieutenant Mahmud Bashir Ahmed, media officer of Rangpur RAB 13, confirmed the matter on Sunday.

According to RAB, on December 25, 2004, accused Wahedul Islam and his accomplices had beaten and killed a person named Mainul Islam in Gajjhanti area of Gangachara upazila and fled.

In this incident, the victim's father filed a murder case at Gangachara police station as plaintiff.

Since the incident, accused Wahedul Islam has been hiding in different parts of the country. Meanwhile, Rangpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court 1 found the accused guilty after the testimony of 20 witnesses and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Besides, a fine of Tk1 lakh was imposed on him.

On information, RAB-13, Battalion Sadar and RAB-1 Uttara, Dhaka jointly arrested him on Saturday night from Uttara.

According to RAB, during primary interrogation, the accused admitted that he killed the victim by hitting him on the chest with a stick and an iron rod. The accused has been handed over to Parashuram police station in Rangpur metropolis for further legal action.
