Bishwa Ijtema: Some roads to remain closed on Sunday

As done during the first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema, the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has issued traffic directives to ease the movement of devout Muslims commuting to and from the congregation ground.

Movement of vehicles from Tongi to Bhogra Bypass on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, Kamarpara Road, Abdullahpur to Bypile on Ashulia Road will remain suspended from 6am on Sunday till the end of “akheri munajat” (final prayer), said GMP Commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam on Saturday.

The GMP commissioner requested commuters to use the bypass road to avoid traffic gridlocks.

Nazrul said law enforcement agencies will be alert to ensure maximum security for those coming to the Ijtema ground.

“Ensuring the safety of pilgrims is our religious and constitutional duty,” he said.

When asked about train movement on the day of Akheri Munajat, the GMP chief said the government has made special arrangements for buses and trains.

“The Gazipur Metropolitan Police and other law enforcement agencies are ensuring that people can travel safely by rail. The Gazipur district administration has deployed mobile courts as well… We are all working together,” he said.

The second phase of the Bishwa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims after Hajj, began on the bank of the Turag River in Tongi, on the outskirts of Dhaka city, on Friday.
